We’re now going to take a rare break from writing about murder to cover a story that’s just about plain-old death–but with a weird twist. In North Carolina, a funeral home is on damage control after an unfortunate mix-up resulted in the wrong corpse being showcased in a woman’s casket at her funeral.
Two sisters–Jennifer Taylor and Jennetta Archer–arrived at a Hunter’s Funeral Home in Ahoskie on Sept. 7 to view their mother’s body. In horror, they realized a different woman was wearing their mother’s clothes, WAVY reported.
According to Archer, there was no physical resemblance between their mother and the imposter corpse and that the woman “was swimming in the clothes because she was so small compared to my mother.”
The sisters confronted workers at the funeral home about the error. They denied it at first but then checked the embalming room and saw that Mary Archer was, in fact, not inside her casket. The mix-up was quickly fixed and the ceremony went on.
The lead embalmer at Hunter’s Funeral Home called it an honest mistake and apologized to the family, adding that this had never happened before in more than 40 years of embalming.
