Last month we stumbled upon a very bizarre news story from Russia, where a fisherman made a macabre discovery in the icy Amur River: 27 pairs of hands. They had been severed at the wrists and stuffed into bags. Located under twenty miles from the Chinese border, authorities believe the hands were likely discarded by a forensics lab, but social media websleuths say not to discount the possibility of a more nefarious origin.
In one image, the 54 hands are sticking up from the snow like old mushrooms.
Authorities know little about the hands so far, as they’ve only been able to lift fingerprints from one. Investigators say it looks as though the hands were improperly disposed of by a forensics lab in Khabarovsk.
“Based on the [investigation] results, a legal assessment will be made of the actions of officials of the forensic medical institution in the city of Khabarovsk responsible for the disposal of these biological objects,” the Investigative Committee wrote.
Even if there is a simple explanation for the hands, it is certainly not a routine discovery for a fisherman. However, in recent years, there have been some pretty creepy finds washing ashore. The Pacific Northwest has reported severed feet washing ashore. And you never know when a severed head may turn up.
