There is so much of our world we still don’t understand. Throughout history, countless mysteries have suggested a paranormal, creepy and often dangerous dimension of existence that lies just out of our grasp.

So many unexplained phenomenon and conspiracies may seem far-fetched on the surface. However, you only have to delve into the facts to see the substance and quantity of these claims vastly increase their credibility.

These five documentaries each cover some of the world’s strangest mysteries and ask the important questions to get closer to the truth.

1. The Zodiac Killer

Unsolved murder cases are endless in number, and few stand out from the crowd. However, the serial killer – named the Zodiac – of the late 1960s took ritualistic murder to a whole new level. With seven confirmed victims and eight suspected, it was clear police were dealing with a madman. However, the eerie cryptic letters they began to receive only raised more questions about the killer’s motives.

Like many serial murderers, when the cryptogram was finally solved, it spoke of the afterlife, detailing a sordid and harrowing belief system in the mind of its creator. The documentary itself correlates all the known information about the case, asking who this killer was and why he behaved so, so strangely.

The Zodiac Killer documentary is available via Netflix DVD for residents of the USA. Alternatively, you can purchase it on Amazon.

2. Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles

Some unsolved mysteries are chilling to the core, but others are simply baffling. Such is the case with the Toynbee Tiles in America. Several hundred of these tiles have been found embedded into roads throughout two dozen major cities in the USA and several South American capitals. Their purpose is unknown, but each tile contains the same mysterious message:

Toynbee idea
in movie 2001,
Resurrect dead

on planet Jupiter.”

This award-winning documentary on the topic was directed by Jon Foy in 2011 and received numerous nominations in the Sundance Film Festival.

The full-length documentary is available on Netflix DVD or Amazon.

3. Ghost Stories from Theatreland

When it comes to unexplained mysteries, few are more notorious than tales of specters from the afterlife. Ghost sightings have become so common that the phenomenon is no longer ignorable. However, the question remains why some locations seem to feature in the stories more than others.

Countless theaters across the globe have supposedly undead residents, each sighted by numerous witnesses. In this jaw-dropping BBC radio documentary, some of the most prolific performers of the theater world reveal their remarkable experiences. Hosted by actor Jack Shepherd, it explores some of the most notorious theater ghosts by talking with those who have seen them first hand.

Currently, the podcast is on BBC Iplayer Radio, which is only available in the UK. However, you can access it worldwide by installing accompanying geo-blocking software.

4. The Voynich Code – The World’s Most Mysterious Manuscript

The mysterious Voynich manuscript is one of the least understood mysteries in the world. Thought to have originated in the early 15th century in Northern Italy, this historic book contains a language entirely unknown to everyone. The manuscript got its name from Wilfrid Voynich, a book dealer from Poland who purchased it in 1912.
However, a new lead has recently unfolded and “The Voynich Code” aims to explore this discovery. With research from 100 years of cryptographers combined with modernized material science, the search begins again to decode this baffling mystery.

The documentary is currently available to view on Amazon, and is free for all Prime account holders!

5. In Search of the Great Beast 666: Aleister Crowley

A Satanist to some, a prophet of the new age to others, the Aleister Crowley tale is one that polarizes the opinion of all. Born to a wealthy Christian family, he shed his inherited beliefs and indulged on a search for his own spiritual paradigm. He studied philosophy and literature at Cambridge and traveled South America, Europe and Asia. In 1920, Crowley formed his new religion: Thelema.

From then on, his life was filled with controversy. Accusations of dark magic and occult tendencies surrounded his work, and bigoted views on race and women were a common practice. He soon gained the title as ‘the wickedest man in the world.’ However, Crowley was also known for his writings and creativity and arguably heavily influenced pop culture. This documentary aims to shed light on a genuinely bizarre life that is shrouded in mystery and intrigue.

You can buy the DVD copy of the film on Amazon, or there may be versions available to stream on YouTube.

These five documentaries are just a few of the many great films that aim to find truth in mystery. However, many other great choices could have made the list. Leave a comment below if you have a favorite unsolved mystery documentary that deserves a mention!
