UFO accounts and close encounters with extraterrestrials are often spectacularly mystifying, but they aren’t always terrifying–mainly, because we associate aliens with advanced beings, not actual monsters or beasts, though there are almost certainly trillions of unimaginably horrifying alien creatures spread out across our universe, beings we can’t even fathom. The case of Flatwoods, West Virginia is an example of terrifying possible encounter with a UFO.
The story was first reported on September 12, 1952 by a group of youngsters, who at first thought a meteor was landing on a hillside. A larger group of witnesses soon gathered, including a neighbor and her two sons and a National Guardsman. All of these witnesses reported observing the same incredible phenomenon at the top of the hill: a pulsating globe about the size of a house.
Here’s where the story takes a scary turn. Evidently, as the observers tried to shine a flashlight, they became aware of a creature with animal eyes in the trees nearby. The creature was described by witnesses as being 10 to 15 feet tall with a “blood red face” and “glowing, greenish-orange eyes.”
The monster evidently “floated” towards them, at which point the observers ran away screaming.
A later investigation of the site yielded some strange details, namely parallel skid marks, a large circle of flattened grass and an odd, metallic odor that remained there for days.
It’s also worth pointing out that this UFO sighting was part of a stunning wave of other sightings that occurred during this same period of time.
