The Guardian recently reported a stunning new development for lovers of the macabre. The Airbnb home rental website is offering ghoulish-minded tenants the opportunity to spend the night in one of the most haunted and creepy locations on Earth: the Paris Catacombs. The current offer allows two people a night in the catacombs on Halloween night, replete with a bed, a private concert and even breakfast.
“Before bedtime, a storyteller will have you spellbound with fascinating tales from the catacombs, guaranteed to produce nightmares. Finally, enjoy dawn with the dead, as you become the only living person ever to wake up in the Paris catacombs,” reads the listing.
Airbnb paid around 350,000 euros to license the tunnels for private use, which is a considerable feat, as the area involves hundreds of miles of desolate tunnels that make up some of the oldest and densest sewer systems in the world. That’s not even the start of it. There’s some six million skeletons and thousands of unmarked crypts that reside there, nearly three times the population of Paris.
During the 17th century, the number of corpses buried in Paris’s cemeteries was so great that they began breaking through the walls of people’s cellars and causing serious health concerns. So their remains were exhumed from overcrowded cemeteries in the 18th century and literally poured into the tunnels.
Now you can spend the night there! Read more at www.theguardian.com to learn the logistics of this incredible creepy Halloween offer.
