Marking the second viral space mystery in as many days, NASA photos of dwarf planet Ceres are freaking the Internet out with an anomalous bright spot that seems incomprehensibly…bright, leading some to speculate there is some kind of extraterrestrial industry going on there – or, at the very least, a naturally fantastic phenomenon.
The images were captured by the Dawn unmanned spacecraft, which entered into orbit around Ceres on March 6, 2015, and has since transmitted to Earth tens of thousands of images and gigabytes of other valuable data.
According to NASA, the photo shows:
“The brightest area on Ceres stands out amid shadowy, cratered terrain in this dramatic new view from our Dawn spacecraft, taken as it looked off to the side of the dwarf planet.”
One Facebook user wrote, perhaps facetiously, “I think it’s a space station alien habitat!”
Another user wrote: “First NASA rediscovers a satellite that was supposed to be out of commission that reactivates orbiting jupiter. About a month ago scientists find a repeating message out in space that could be intelligent in origin. Now this. Dude’s 2016 is a weird year do we really not want to rule out first contact? Also can we make sure it’s done with Obama first before we get the oompa loompa? Let’s make a good first impression.”
A third FB user bemoaned the irony of finding such an anomaly on a dwarf planet (one that is nonetheless only 419 million km away): “A planet we have not heard of how convenient.”
