With our endless fascination with ghosts and death…sometimes it makes us wonder just how many people have actually existed on planet Earth. After doing some research we found that, according to the Population Reference Bureau, the answer is 108 billion.
We were blown away by the sheer magnitude of the number. According to their calculations, that means the dead outnumber the living by about 94 percent. And if ghosts exist…that’s a hell of a lot of spirits roaming the planet. Do you feel insignificant now?
Carl Haub, the scientist behind the study, explains that humans are widely believed to have made their appearance around 50,000 B.C., so that was year zero for his study. As more people began to migrate from the solitary hunter-gatherer lifestyle to villages, the world population grew at a whopping pace. By the era of the Roman Empire experts estimate that there were at least 45 million people. And by the 1600’s, the era of the Black Death, the number had reached half a billion. Today, the population is 7.1 billion, but if you add up all living with the dead, the total has reached 108 billion. You can see see this in the graph below.
With the remains of literally hundreds of billions of humans long since forgotten and buried, surely the link, the purpose to humanity lies somewhere within all those skeletons, waiting to be dug up…
