Did Darth Vader Originate From 19th Century Victorian Firefighters?

We were recently stumbling through old vintage steampunk head gear when we saw a meme comparing the masks of Darth Vader and C3PO to the ‘rescue masks’ worn by Victorian firefighters. The resemblances are simply uncanny. George Lucas has often given credit to Flash Gordon and the mythology book The Hero With a Thousand Faces, but it turns out 19th-century firefighters may be the true genesis of the most iconic arch-nemesis in film history.

Apparently, this is old news–but it blew our minds, particularly when you consider that one of the companies that made these breathing helmets was named Vajen-Bader. Weird synchronicity, or did George Lucas get high one day, find these masks in some book and lift a few ideas? Additionally, the gold mask looks pretty similar to C-3PO, does it not?

There’s a whole Reddit thread devoted to this if you want to further nerd out. In the meantime, here are a few weird steampunk Star Wars images…
